UAE has proposed diversifying their energy needs by 2050 where seventy-five per cent will come from renewable green sources. The government also aims to set up more energy-efficient technologies to improve energy management without compromising the comfort of its citizen. An important step to achieving this goal is to set up centralized district cooling systems.

Usage of capacity more efficiently:

District cooling systems are more efficient in terms of capacity utilization compared to traditional air-conditioning systems. For the same level of cooling a district cooling system requires fifteen per cent less cooling than ACs. This is due to two main factors: load diversity and the ability to design and install capacity flexibly. 


District cooling systems serve a variety of loads, such as residential, office, and commercial buildings, which do not require cooling on a regular basis. As a result, peak demand is optimised, reducing the capacity required by up to 25%. On the other hand, single-building systems or each unit have to be designed to meet maximum cooling needs individually. 


Additionally, district cooling has the advantage of being able to increase its capacity dynamically adjusting to the increasing need of the population, unlike single-building systems which are usually designed with a margin of error and have a fixed capacity. 


Low energy requirements:

The district cooling costs per ton are forty to fifty per cent lesser than conventional cooling systems used for the individual building put together in a certain area. It is due to the usage of more efficient cooling systems in place for centralized cooling systems that aims to maintain temperature for several households at once. Also because of its centralized feature, it is easier to maintain. In contrast, for individual refrigeration, the quality of the technology used can deteriorate over time and go unnoticed by households and your energy bill increases.


Peak time energy management:

The district cooling system has the advantage of reducing the stress on power systems during peak hours due to its thermal storage capacity. This allows the system to balance energy consumption throughout the day by storing up to 30% of its potential output in chilled water tanks. On the other hand, in-building systems add a full load on the power system during peak times, making it more challenging to manage the power supply. This distinct difference in power management makes your efforts to economize via district cooling cost savings easier.


MENA district cooling project conference:
